I’m tired of fence sitters

April’s slacking off, sweet monkey jesus! A bunch of broke ass artists can get a show going. A bunch of bums can amass a metric shit ton of bottle and cans.  A bunch of business owners doing business … nope, can’t be done.

I’m sure it’s my fault, but I’m trying to fix it, I really am. People are smart, people are good, the universe is a friendly place when it’s not imploding on itself. The talent’s there. The workers are there.

The resources aren’t all gathered together in funny incubators, but they’re there and they can be accessed with the right moves. You don’t need loans, or the government, you don’t even need U.S. dollars (earmuffs, Uncle Sam).

What is it? What’s holding you back? Who do you work for?!

Nicolas Berggruen is a Merchant

The billionaire is born in Paris. Begins training with London Merchant Securities. Educates himself in New York City at NYU for International Finance, and bases his work there to build his fortune.

“Luckily, as a man you don’t need much,” he said. “I have very few possessions … a few papers, a couple of books, and a few shirts, jackets, sweaters.”

Mr. Berggruen is a uniquely wealthy man who lives a nomadic lifestyle, selling or donating most of his luxurious material properties. But he still chills with the models, hotel hopping and playing the bachelor’s market like a fiddle.

The Merchant Of Death

“… former United Nations arms trafficking investigator Kathi Lynn Austin, says the case allowed American companies to avoid exposure of their collusion with with the U.S. government and private companies linked to Dick Cheney during the Iraq war, even after United Nations sanctions against him in 2004. Authorities say Viktor Bout was involved in trafficking arms to dictators and stoking conflicts in Africa, South America and the Middle East”

Whereas ambassadors deal diplomatically commerce, war and peace, with diplomacy … some Merchants really get in the thick of things, dealing arms to belligerent forces. Viktor Bout is in a real thicky situation.

“All hail the Bunny King, and his emissary the Energizer. Stay ever chocolate in all your endeavors, my bunnies. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, lest you devalue their painted brilliance. May the Peeps be with you, always.” – me

Sounds like America, doesn’t it?

I caught Sam Pitroda on CNN the other week with Ali Velshi talking about the future of India. Ali made a joke on air, hinting that India’s problems sound like America, in that they both governments have a problem with decision making. And something Mr. Pitroda said struck the chord perfectly.

“Many of these processes are designed during British Raj they don’t make sense anymore. Essentially they were designed for command and control, and today we need processes for collaboration, cooperation, good communication. And I think — there’s a little bit of disconnect with the old and the new. Old says, status quo. New says, generational change. And I think we are going through that phase.”

Think about it. Look at the headlines and see if you don’t find all this legislation and executive order going in an extreme command and control direction. I see these global responses to financial crises and see nothing but European blunt force trauma. I look at the markets and see a trend leaning the other way. Are not the new generation of Americans begging for a better connected and cooperative society?
